American Reunion/American Pie: Reunion is pretty sweet

If you’ve already seen Avengers Assemble/The Avengers and are in the mood for some comedy, then I suggest seeing American Reunion. And it doesn’t matter if you’ve not seen the dodgy sequels made after the first three films.

As the title suggests, the story here mainly centres around the hapless group of friends from the original three films coming back to their home town for their first highschool reunion. We now find them all trying to lead the lives of adults, but of course none are leading perfect lives.

In fact, one of the best things this film does is play with our expectations, well at least the expectations of fans of the originals. Nothing is as it seems and this makes all the crazy stuff that happens just that bit more delectable.

Now, I have to come clean and say that I really don’t like any of The Hangover films. And it’s not because I prefer dick and fart jokes over random crud happening to people. No, the reason I dislike The Hangover films is because I’ve never been able to find any of the main characters likable. But with the original American Pie characters you’ve got enough people who aren’t douche bags to find someone to care about and be genuinely interested in what happens to them.

But this is a comedy, so just what the hell makes it funny? Of course I don’t want to send spoilers your way, so let me just say that there’s just about the right mix of slap stick, innuendo, penis shots, scat and drug references to keep most adults very happy.

And do you know what’s the hallmark of a good comedy? Most of your audience laughing so loud that you think they’re going to all piss themselves laughing that hard for that long. And that’s what happened in the cinema last night: the majority of the audience was laughing at the on-screen antics. It’s been a while since I went to a comedy screening and that happened.

Perhaps there was one thing in the film that did unsettle me though. Several times, a few of the main male characters almost are or are definitely raped. But what was unsettling was that no one on-screen called it rape, but that’s what it clearly was as there was a lack of consent from the guys and they protested. Thankfully no one laughed at these moments.

Anyway, it’s a good film. You should go and see it.
